Hanging around other book people – along with all of us who enjoy related fun – is always a pleasure. And creating community is a big part of our purpose. Therefore, Dragonfly Book Bar will host a variety of social events, classes, and other activities in-store. Upcoming events are listed below, including details of price and how to register (where applicable).

We are also open to hosting a wide variety of events or rentals – from one-off and regular book clubs to classes/workshops to birthday and other parties. If you are interested in hosting your event or rental at Dragonfly Book Bar, please complete this Event Request Form at least three (3) weeks in advance. Pricing will be dependent on the type of event, number of participants, timeframe, etc. We also welcome folks to hang out in our space and enjoy food and drink while engaging in quiet hobbies!

  • Jane Austen Reading Group

    Thursday, April 9, 5:00pm

    Join Dr. Karen Shaw of King University and other readers for a lively discussion of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. This is the last program in this series celebrating Jane Austen’s 250th birthday in 2025!

  • Sip & Paint at Dragonfly Book Bar!

    Friday, April 10, 5:30-7:30pm

    Join us to enjoy some delicious drinks and get your paint on with Jordan Glover Creations!

    The class is $25 (drinks are not included in the price).

    To reserve your spot and supplies, there is a $10 nonrefundable deposit which can be sent through venmo, paypal, zelle or cashapp. The remaining $15 can be paid the night of the event through the same method or cash, or in advance with a single payment.   • Dragonfly Book Club

    Join like-minded readers for our book club, held on the 2nd Monday of each month. April’s read is Heartwood by Amity Gaige, and it is sure to lead to some interesting discussions!

    In general, book club meetings last around one hour, but they sometimes extend a bit beyond that timeframe.

  • Word Nerds Writers' Gathering

    Saturday, April 18, 3:00-5:00pm

    Every third Saturday of the month we invite writers of all types - from published and aspiring authors to poets to journalers, and more - to hang out at Dragonfly with like-minded folks. This is a great space to share your creativity with others, network with other writers, get feedback on your work, and get inspired. Each gathering begins with a 10-15 minute writing prompt exercise, but then the rest of the time is guided by the participants. Join us and get writing!

  • Puzzles & Games Night

    Friday, April 24, 5:00-8:00pm

    Every fourth Friday, we invite fellow puzzlers and board/card gamers to hang out with us throughout the evening. You can bring your own puzzles and games, or borrow some of ours!

  • Independent Bookstore Day!

    Saturday, April 25, all day

    Independent Bookstore Day is a national one-day party that celebrates independent bookstores across the country online and in-store.

    This will be the first year Dragonfly Book Bar participates, and we are super excited about it! It’s a great way to support an independent woman-owned business and shop local. Throughout the day, join us for giveaways and other freebies, exclusive books to purchase, Blind Dates with a Book and Kids’ Mystery Books, sweet treats, a chance to find a Libro.FM Golden Ticket, and all the cool things Dragonfly has to offer!

  • Rise Up Open Mic

    Saturday, April 25, 5:00-7:30pm

    Come out to Dragonfly for Rise Up Open Mic, an event hosted by the Appalachian Peace Education Center and Take Action SWVA. This evening of protest songs, resistance poetry, spoken word, and community solidarity is part of a regional series in memory of Steve Fisher who dedicated his life to peace and justice here in Appalachia through song, community, and resistance. This event is open to the public, and there's no fee to attend or perform.

    Local Author Social & Showcase

    Saturday, May 9, 2:00-5:00pm

    Join us for Dragonfly Book Bar’s Local Author Social & Showcase!

    With each Local Author Social & Showcase, we will feature several local or regional authors, giving them time to talk about their book and a table for selling and signing their books while they are here.

    May’s featured authors are Pamela Gilmer, Hunter Hess, Barbara Latinka, Greg Lilly, Serina Marshall, and Tonya Nagle.
